The whole point of crossovers like the 2022 Mazda CX-30 is that they drive more like a car than an SUV, and few live up to that mission when driving around the roads of Martinsville, Danville, Rocky Mount, and Greensboro anywhere near as well as the little Mazda. With a choice of engines, stunning styling, standard all-wheel-drive, decent economy, and seriously impressive standard features, the 2022 Mazda CX-30 is a cut above its rivals.
Mazda offers the 2022 CX-30 in America in eight impressive trim levels that cover a wide range of specifications and an equally wide variety of budgets. Every one of those trim levels has a justifiable place in the lineup, which starts with the entry-level 2.5 S and goes all the way up to the top-of-the-range 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus. Just above the 2.5 S base model, we then have the Select, Preferred, Carbon Edition, Premium, and the 2.5 Turbo trim levels, and the impressive 2.5 Turbo Premium sits just below the range-topping 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus.
Several luxury crossover SUVs have a standard model and an almost identical one with a sloping, coupe-like roofline giving a sportier aesthetic that the manufacturer charges quite a bit extra for. That’s not the way Mazda does things, however, and the 2022 CX-30 has that sporty, premium, muscular, modern, and mildly aggressive look throughout the range.
There’s no disputing that the 2022 Mazda CX-30 is some way from being a hardcore off-roader. Still, Mazda has made AWD standard across the entire CX-30 range for the 2022 model year, which certainly sets this particular subcompact SUV apart from the competition.
All versions of the compact Mazda crossover, including the CX-30 Premium trim level, get a 2.5-liter inline-four as their standard powerplant that develops 186 horsepower and 186 lb.-ft. of torque that goes to all four wheels through a standard six-speed automatic transmission. Trim levels with “Turbo” in their name inevitably feature a 2.5-liter turbo-four under their hoods, providing the CX-30 with 250 horsepower and 320 lb.-ft. of torque when premium 93 octane fuel is used, or a still-impressive 227 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. when using regular 87 octane gas.
These days, every model in the Mazda range comes with impressive safety credentials, and the 2022 Mazda CX-30 is no exception. Each of the eight available trim levels comes with standard automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and active lane control. The majority of models in the 2022 lineup also come with blind-spot monitors. All that has helped the 2022 CX-30 receive a total five-star rating for overall safety from the NHTSA, and the IIHS has named it a Top Safety Pick+.
Even the base version of the 2022 CX-30 has standard all-wheel-drive, tons of driver-assistance and crash-avoidance features, 17-inch alloy wheels, and an 8.8-inch display infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, so you should be able to imagine how generously-equipped the rest of the range is. The 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus easily passes for a luxury model costing quite a bit more because of its standard equipment list with adaptive headlights, a surround-view camera system, natural leather upholstery, navigation, Traffic Sign Recognition, and plenty more besides.
You could spend a lot of time and effort trying to unearth another non-luxury subcompact crossover SUV that comes anywhere close to what the 2022 Mazda CX-30 has to offer, but why bother when you can test drive a CX-30 for yourself today with a test drive from Nelson Mazda here at 201 Commonwealth Blvd, Martinsville, VA?
