Can you have the practicality of a compact SUV in a package that looks sensational, feels more than a little premium, and is excellent to drive on the roads of Martinsville, Danville, Rocky Mount, and Greensboro but doesn’t also come with a hefty price ticket? Of course, you can, especially if you take the time to check out the sensational, refreshed, 2022 Mazda CX-5 that checks all those boxes and then some.
The Mazda CX-5 has always been a standout model in its class for its unique exterior styling that’s sleek, sporty, and a little futuristic. Still, the 2022 CX-5 gets a light refresh that makes this highly desirable compact crossover SUV even more desirable than it was already. And if you like a choice of trim levels to choose from to get a vehicle that’s just right for you, few rivals come anywhere close to offering as many options as Mazda does with the new CX-5.
There are now no fewer than eight different versions of the CX-5 to choose from, which start with the entry-level 2.5 S and then go to the 2.5 S Select, 2.5 S Preferred, 2.5 S Carbon Edition, 2.5 S Premium, 2.5 S Premium Plus, 2.5 Turbo, and finally to the sensational pinnacle of the 2022 lineup in the shape of the 2.5 Turbo Signature.
One area where you don’t get an abundance of choice with the CX-5 is the drivetrain, and that’s because Mazda no longer asks anyone to pay extra for all-wheel-drive as all eight trim levels now come with AWD as part of the standard equipment. There is a choice of engine, however, but the two engines are trim-level specific. All models up to and including the 2.5 S Premium Plus come with a 2.5-liter turbo-four that develops 187 horsepower and 186 lb.-ft. of torque, which is then sent to all four wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission.
If you’d like a more powerful engine under the hood of your 2022 Mazda CX-5, you’ll have to look toward one of the two top trim levels. The 2.5 Turbo and 2.5 Turbo Signature versions of the Mazda unsurprisingly come with a turbocharged powerplant, which is a 2.5-liter turbo-four that puts out 227 horsepower 310 lb.-ft. of torque and also comes mated to that six-speed automatic transmission.
Mazda places much emphasis on safety these days with a raft of advanced safety features that are now standard across the whole lineup, such as automatic emergency braking, active lane control, adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitors. All this has contributed to a full five-star rating for overall safety from the NHTSA and Top Safety Pick+ status from the IIHS.
It’s not just safety features that are abundant across the range either, as even the most affordably priced 2022 CX-5 comes with an impressive list of standard equipment. That list includes 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic rain-sensing wipers, auto on/off high beam LED headlights, AWD, remote keyless entry, push-button start, air conditioning, Bluetooth audio streaming and phone connectivity, and a 10.25-inch screen for an infotainment system that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
It’s hard not to take a second look or turn your head anytime you see a 2022 Mazda CX-5, but there’s an awful lot more to recommend the CX-5 beyond its gorgeous exterior styling.
