The only thing that appears remotely mass-market about the 2022 Mazda3 Sedan when you see it on the roads of Martinsville, Danville, Rocky Mount, and Greensboro is the price tag. Apart from that, the Mazda3 Sedan could easily be mistaken for a genuine luxury model with its stunning exterior styling and fabulously high-quality interiors. On top of all that, this is also one of the very few sedans available with the extra capability of all-wheel drive these days.
We may be getting used to cars in this sort of class only being offered in a small number of available trim levels, but Mazda has gone above and beyond the call of duty for those who like a lot of choices with no fewer than eight different trim levels here. The first model in this expansive lineup is the 2.0 S, and from there, we go to 2.5 S, Select, Preferred, Carbon Edition, Premium, 2.5 Turbo, and finally to the range-topping 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus. Front-wheel drive is standard with the 2022 Mazda3 Sedan. Still, you can upgrade to the extra capability of AWD for Preferred and Premium trim levels, and it’s also part of the standard equipment if you go as far as the 2.5 Turbo or the 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus.
More choice than the competition offers also extends to the engine options for the 2022 Mazda3 Sedan, which is currently available with three different powerplants under the hood. The first is a 2.0-liter inline-four in the base model, which develops 155 horsepower and 150 lb.-ft. of torque, but from the 2.5 S and higher the standard powerplant is a 2.5-liter inline-four developing 186 horsepower and 186 lb.-ft. of torque. It probably won’t come as too much of a surprise to learn that models with Turbo in their name feature the most powerful engine option, which is a 2.5-liter turbo-four that puts 227 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque at the little Mazda’s disposal. This engine can be even more potent if you choose to use 93-octane fuel because it will then be capable of putting out 250 horsepower and 320 lb.-ft. of torque.
Every 2022 Mazda3 Sedan now comes with a standard six-speed automatic transmission, so front-drive versions are rated by the EPA at up to 28 mpg in the city, 36 mpg on the highway, and 31 mpg combined. The most powerful turbo models with their standard AWD are not as frugal, but they still return pretty reasonable fuel economy figures of 23 mpg in the city, 32 mpg on the highway, and 27 mpg combined.
Mazda doesn’t build a stripped-down, fleet-focused version of its compact sedan, so even the most affordable model boasts advanced safety features that include the likes of automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams, active lane control, and adaptive cruise control. This hard focus on safety has helped the Mazda3 Sedan gain a full five-star rating for overall safety from the NHTSA and that much-coveted Top Safety Pick+ status from the IIHS.
An entry-level Mazda3 S comes straight from the factory with an impressive list of features that include the likes of keyless start, an 8-speaker audio system, 16-inch alloys, LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers, air conditioning, a full complement of power features, an electronic parking brake, and an 8.8-inch screen for the infotainment system. However, if you are one of the growing numbers of consumers who now consider Android Auto or Apple CarPlay compatibility to be pretty essential, that feature is only standard with the 2.5 S trim level and higher.
You don’t have to be a car fanatic to fall for the seductive curves, sporty stance, and forward-canted grille of the 2022 Mazda3 Sedan exterior styling, but even the most hard-headed car-buyer will find it hard to fault any aspect of the Mazda3 when they get behind the wheel for a test drive from Nelson Mazda here at 201 Commonwealth Blvd, Martinsville, VA. Give us a call at (276) 638-2331 today for more information about the pricing and availability of the 2022 Mazda3 Sedan, and while you’re on the phone, we can book a test drive appointment for you for a time that fits your schedule.
