Many people in Martinsville, Danville, Rocky Mount, and Greensboro are familiar with the style and class of modern Mazda vehicles, but the brand still needs to be ready to stand still and admire its work. Instead, we now have the all-new 2024 Mazda CX-90, a stunningly stylish three-row midsize crossover SUV with seating for up to eight, and Mazda’s first-ever electrified powertrains.
Plenty of vehicles offer seating for up to eight people across three rows, but few do it as stylishly, desirably, and with such good value for money as the all-new 2024 Mazda CX-90. On top of all that, the all-new CX-90 also caters to a wide variety of shoppers and budgets, with at least eleven different models to choose from. With three different electrified powertrain options available, the CX-90 trim levels get divided into three groups.
Five trim levels are available with the standard powerplant under the hood, three with the high-output version of that mild hybrid powertrain, and three more feature Mazda’s first-ever plug-in hybrid powertrain. The five trim levels that feature the standard powerplant are the 3.3 Turbo Slelect, 3.3 Turbo Preferred, 3.3 Turbo Preferred Plus, 3.3 Turbo Premium, and 3.3 Turbo Premium Plus. High-output turbo models are available in Turbo S, Turbo S Premium, and Turbo S Premium Plus trims. Plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models are available in PHEV Preferred, PHEV Premium, and PHEV Premium Plus versions.
Hybrid powertrains can deliver as much power or performance as you like, but getting the right blend of the two is essential. The Mazda CX-90 presents shoppers with three options. The first option is the standard e-Skyactiv G 3.3-liter turbocharged inline-six with 280 horsepower and 332 lb.-ft. of torque, while the high-output version delivers an even more impressive 340 horsepower and 369 lb.-ft. of torque when run on the recommended premium fuel.
The plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain is the way to go if you want to lean more toward efficiency, although it still doesn’t lack in the performance department. The PHEV system combines a 2.5-litre four-cylinder gas engine with an electric motor and a 17.8 kWh high-capacity battery. The result is 323 horsepower and 369 lb.-ft. of torque, and the opportunity to operate on electricity only under certain circumstances. Every version of the all-new CX-90 features a standard rear-biased all-wheel-drive system and a new eight-speed automatic transmission.
The price and badge of the Mazda CX-90 illustrate that it doesn’t quite fit into the category of genuine prestige and luxury models, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a fierce rival to those auspicious European, Japanese, and US competitors. The exterior styling is as contemporary and stylish as we’ve come to expect, and the interior is a masterclass in comfort, quality, and generous levels of standard equipment.
Top models feature Mazda’s first-ever fully digital 12.3-inch TFT LCD instrument panel display, a 12.3-inch touchscreen for the excellent infotainment system. The highest trim levels also offer black or white Nappa leather seats, a heated steering wheel, heated ventilated front seats, an eight-way power adjustable passenger seat, and heated seats in the second row. Other standout features include Smart Brake Support Reverse, a 150-volt power outlet in the cargo area, windshield wiper de-icer, and a 360° View Monitor enhanced with a new See-Through View feature. But don’t worry if your budget doesn’t stretch to the top trim levels, as every version of the all-new CX-90 comes with a stunning list of standard and available features.
